Cinematic

Instagram is the newcomer to the social media world but it is definitely making an entrance, with over 15 million users since it’s realise in September 2010,  and within the last few months it has gained 4 million of those users (Megrund 2011), proving its popularity is only getting bigger! It has the tools to create a standard photograph into what has been described as a ‘creative masterpiece’. This is just one of the many ways amateurs are able to instil beauty and magic into the non-traditional digital photography area; much like how the professional contemporary romantics already are doing in new media art, digital photography and self-publishing- creating a nostalgic feeling (WGSN Creative Direction Team 2011). This has led to the introduction of cinematic features in fashion, with fashion and film coming together like never before.

Justin Watson and Alastair McCann wanted to see what would happen if the made designers partner up with film makers and the result was the stunning Obus short film (Millikan 2012). There are also website's like SHOWstudio dedicated to fashion films whose popularity is only going to get greater once this cinematic trend becomes in full flow in 2012/2013. With this nostalgic feeling it will influence people to dress in vintage or at least vintage looking clothes as seen below with Kat’s dress and shoes.

Technologic

2012 is all about technology, with iPadification taking over allowing objects to achieve celebrity status (X-ray spec 2012). There will be no escaping technology as it moves into the home, with Google entering the consumer electronics market and creating a music system to be controlled with your android phone (Halliday 2012). Along with this retailers will have to change customers to active creators in order for them to be more likely to part with money due to the current economy, a perfect example of this has been shown by the Melbourne fashion label, Where Lovers Lie, who have created an interactive musical mannequin by placing smart textiles onto it (The new rules 2012). This has and will continue to result in technological designs being used in fashion, with a prime example being fashion designer Brooke Roberts, who has used images of medical X-ray and computed tomography scans, body-mapping and contouring forming the basis of her designs (The science of fashion 2012). With 2012 being labelled the “Year of Hero’s” (Martin 2012) due to the large amount of highly anticipated superhero movies out, this will only add to the interest in technology and gadgets a-like due to the many to featuring in these movies increasing the scope of this trend. We are already seeing this in street fashion with Chris here wearing a t-shirt printed with skulls that each has a different digital print making up the skull.

Do it for yourself (and the environment)

Australia’s economy is starting to pick up again but with Europe’s not this isn’t exactly instilling much hope in us all, resulting in the people of 2012/13 starting to recycle old items to make new ones (2012: The year ahead. 2012). Whether it is old clothes, jewellery, handbags, people will be adapting them into the new seasons must have. DIY bloggers are on the rise giving lots of consumer’s inspiration on what they can produce (Preston and Wu 2011). Along with this sustainability will become a big part of life, with many companies influencing customers to get involved by offering deals if old products are returned (2012: The year ahead. 2012). In addition with this, the recent British vogue cover girl and number one singer Lana del Rey has been spotted supporting sustainability at UCLA’s Institute of Environment and Sustainability (The Green Style Style Blog 2012) which will only be influencing her ever growing fan based to do the same. Ben Atkinson-Willes and Charlie Crooke from London’s Future Industries entrepreneurial agency have recently designed a ‘while-you-wait’ unit for recycling plastic (Recycle while you wait 2012), which allows the user to see the recycling process to the very end, enforcing on them that what they are doing is helping and creating something new. And what will all this world and money saving activity do? Bubble right up to the fashion designers of course! With Pablo Londono’s Pedes in Orbis collection (Litter Couture 2012) inspired by useful scrap just the beginning of what is to come. We are already seeing this on the streets of Brisbane as shown here with Kristine wearing her own DIY hair slide.
